Guruvayur Ekadasi falls in the month of “Vrishchika” (Suklapaksha) is considered as the most auspicious festival and got special significance in Guruvayur Temple. It is believed that it was on this day that Lord Sri Krishna imparted “Srimad Bhagavad Gita” to Arjuna during The Mahabharata war times. It was on this day in “Vrischika” that Adi Sankaracharya, who forgot to pay obeisance while passing through Guruvayur, incurred the Lord’s displeasure. Upon realizing his mistake, Adi Sankaracharya performed Sayana Pradkshinam and (later on this has become one of the offerings to the Lord). performed various Poojas for many days. Ekadasi Vilakku (illuminations) starts a month before Ekadasi day, each Vilakku is an offering made by different persons, families or organizations. Dwadasi Panam is a custom of offering a token amount at Koothambalam on Dwadasi day for the welfare of the family.
