As per the folklore, Amuthokar an ardent devotee of Lord Siva built this temple. Amuthokar was serving the King Masukuntha as a minister. The King beheaded Amuthokar on denying his request to offer half of his Punya to the King. On his death, this place echoed with sounds of Amuthokar. Knowing his mistake, King offered prayers to the Lord Abathsahyeswarar (Lord Siva) and relieved from the Sins.
The deity here supposed to be self-manifested (Swayambhu). As per the legend, Chakra Theertha which is located right infront of temple was created by Lord Vishnu with his Disc. This temple was surrounded by 15 Theerthams among which Amritha Pushkarini is very holy.
