Koodal Azhagar Temple Madurai, History, Timings, Darshan and Pooja details
Koodal Azhagar Temple History
This temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is one of the 108 Holy abodes of Lord Vishnu. Pandya King invited Vishnu Chittha an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu to Madurai court to settle disputes among religious sects. Vishnu Chittha proved the Supremacy of Lord Vishnu with references from Vedic texts. At the end of the arguments, a small bag containing gold coins suspended in a pole landed down on its own in the hands of Vishnu Chittha.
To commemorate the success, Pandya King led the procession with Vishnu Chittha seated on top of the decorated Royal elephant. Lord Koodal Azhagar with his divine Vehicle Garuda appeared before him and blessed the Poet. On seeing the Lord he regained his senses and blessed the Lord with a long life of thousands of years and recited 12 verses in Tamil which is popular by Thirupallandu.
The Pandya King praised Vishnu Chittha as “Pattar Piran” and Lord Vishnu called him as “Periyazhwar”
