Thiruparankundram History
As per the Legend, Lord Subramanya Swamy married Indra’s daughter Devasena at this place. It is said that this temple was built during 6th Century AD. This is a cave temple where Lord Resides where with DevaSena. This is one of the 6 holy abodes of Lord Muruga. It is also said that Subramanya did penance for Lord Siva here as Parangirinathar. King Harishchandra did penance here on this Hill for Lord Siva.
As per the folklore, Poet Nakkeerar was captured by the Devil who came here to perform penance for Lord Siva. The poet prayed for Lord Murugan who appeared before and Killed the demon with his weapon. Lord Subramanya created a holy tank with his weapon Vel on request of the poet.
Punugu (Civet oil) will be applied to the deity. Abhishek is performed on the weapon Vel.
