Kanaka Durga Temple History
Goddess Kanaka Durga self-manifested here. As per the Legends, Malleswara was installed by Yudhistra, elder brother of Pandavas. Arjuna, one of the Pandava brother’s installed Vijayeswara to celebrate his victory with Lord Siva. Arjuna performed penance for Lord Siva seeking Pasupatha Astra. Lord Siva took the form of Hunter, Goddess Parvati as Huntress and Siva Ganas took various forms to test the devotion of Arjuna. Lord Siva as a hunter started hunting wild boar on the Indrakiladri mountain. Wild boar while escaping from the hunter came near to Arjuna. Arjuna thought of shooting board with his bow and arrow. This lead to the fight between Lord Siva and Arjuna. Though Arjuna was no match for Lord Siva, tried to his best to win the fight. Impressed Lord Siva appeared him in actual form and blessed Arjuna with Pasupatha Astra. To commemorate this great event, Arjuna installed Lord Siva and offered his prayers. Lord Siva here called by Vijayeswara. Arjuna the great wrestler called the Lord Siva Malleswara.
