Ashtami Festival

Ashtami Festival is celebrated in the month of Vrischikam. It is a 13-day festival, the main event Ashtami being on the 12th day and Arattu or the holy bath on the 13th day. Vaikom Ashtami is celebrated in a grand across Kerala. During the festival days, Special programs, Poojas, Processions will be held.

Temple will be thronged with thousands of devotees on Ashtami day. The 2 Km procession from Udayanapuram takes nearly 3 hours to reach the north gate at Vaikom at about 1:30 am. The meeting between Father Vaikathappan and Son takes place in East Nada Street. After the celestial meet, father and Son will be taken out in a procession around the temple and the farewell takes place at the Northern gate.

Koodi Pooja

Next day, Arattu takes place at the tank (Arattu Kulam) which is 1 Km from the East Nada. Lord Udayanapuram comes to Vaikom to watch this function. After Arattu, a Koodi (Joint) Pooja takes place for father and Son in the Sanctum. After the ceremony, Vaikathappan also goes to Son’s place and has his holy bath there. There again Koodi Pooja is performed.

On Ashtami day, there are no offerings at Vaikom Temple as Lord himself will go on fast aspiring his Son’s success in the battle.

Pananchikkal Bhagawati History, Pooja details

Pananchikkal Bhagawati History

On the southern side of the temple complex, there is a temple dedicated to Goddess Pananchikkal. This is a Vana-Durga exposed to the Sun and Rain without any roof.

Once there was a Yakshi roaming in the temple premises, harassing devotees. With fear, devotees approached Saint Vyaghrapada for protection. The stage turned to Stambha Vigneswara on the North-Eastern side of the temple at the Entrance. Vigneswara cast a significant glance on Trishul, cut the woman into three pieces. The trunk was thrown on the southern side of the temple, the head at Muthedathu Kavu, 4 Km away and legs at Kuttummel to the north of the temple.

The Yakshi in a previous birth had been a Gandharva damsel, by name Neelakuntala. She once mocked at Sage Agastya and his disciples returning to their Ashram after praying Vaikathappan. Angered Rishi cursed her to become Yakshi and promised liberation at the hands of Trisuli.

Vaikom Mahadeva Temple History, Timings, Darshan, Pooja and Route Info

Vaikom Mahadeva Temple History

As per the Legend, Khara an Asura of the Ramayana performed strict penance for Lord Siva. Impressed Lord Siva appeared before and granted boon and Three Shiva Lingas at Chidambaram. Khara held two Lingas in Right and Left hands and the third one in his mouth. He started his journey through the sky southward. On the way, the Lingas started gaining weight so decided to descend to the Earth. He set Linga in his Right hand at a sacred point, knee-deep in water. After a while, he resumed the journey and tried to remove the Linga but all his effort went vain. He entrusted the Linga to the care of the Sain Vyaghrapada and proceeded to Ettumanur which is 25 Km away, where he installed the left-hand Linga. The third one in the mouth was installed at Kuduthuruthy which is midway between the two places.

As per the folklore, Lord Siva and Goddess Parvati pleased with Saint Vyagharpada devotion gave darshan to him under a Peepal tree in the south of the eastern gateway. This place is marked and special poojas are offered at this place daily. It is said that in the early hours of Ashtami day, in the month of Vrischikam (Nov-Dec) the Vyaghrapada had the divine vision. Annual Ashtami festival is celebrated on this special day. Parasurama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu built the temple and appointed a priest for the daily rituals.
