Thiruvenkadu Temple, Swetharanyeswara Swamy resides here with His Consort Brahma Vidyambal.

Swetharanya means White forest. This temple is famous for Budhan Shanthi. Taking a holy dip at Chandra Theertham, which is at the temple entrance and worshiping Lord Siva will relieve one from Budhan Dosha. Wednesday is the best day for Budhan Pooja.

Thiruvenkadu Temple Legends

There lived a demon Marutvasura who did penance for Lord Brahma and got the powers. With this spiritual power, he started troubling Sages and Devas. Devas prayed to Lord Siva for the rescue. Lord Siva sent his Vahanam Nandi to teach a lesson to this demon. As instructed Nandi fought with the asura, defeated and thrown him into the sea.

The demon did a strict penance for Lord Siva and acquired the Sula from the Siva. With these powers he started troubling, Lord Siva sent Nandi to kill this demon. This time, Nandi was not able to succeed as the demon holds Lord Siva’s Sula, Nand received injuries in the battle. This angered Siva took the form of Agora Murthi and opened his third eye to turn the demon into ashes. It is said that the tree at the exit gate of Lord Siva’s shrine is the place where Lord Siva killed the demon. Lord Siva self-manifested here as Agora Murthy.

It is said that Sun God and Moon God worshipped Lord Siva here.

Valmiki did mention the importance of this temple in The Ramayana. It is as holy as the Kasi in the North.

Thiruvenkadu Temple History

From the inscriptions written on the temple walls, it is known that this temple received huge contributions from the Kings Aditya Chola and Rajaraja Chola.
