According to a well-known legend, the Kanva sage cursed Lord Vishnu and Lakshmi. This is where Lord Shiva appeared before Lord Vishnu and Lakshmi and relieved them from the curse. On the Pranava Hill, Vishnu worships Lord Shiva as “Vanmeekeswara.” Lord Muruga, the commander-in-chief of Devas, fought a war against demons at these places, which are Tiruparankundram, Tiruchendur, and Thiruporur. The battle in Thiruporur, where Murugan fought and killed Thaaraga, gave rise to the name “Porur.” “Por” in Tamil means “war.”

According to folklore, a downpour flooded the area. After receiving instructions from a celestial voice to remove the statue beneath a palm tree and build a temple around it, a sage named Chidambara Adigal traveled from Madurai to this location. The temple has a well-preserved depiction of Muruga that was discovered beneath what is generally thought to have been the original palm leaf.
