Maruthamalai Temple History

The temple has a long history and is linked to the well-known Pambatti Siddhar, also called the “Snake Doctor,” because of his skill at capturing snakes and using their venom for medicinal purposes. One day, Pambatti Siddhar met the sage Sattai Munivar in Marudhamalai while looking for a rare breed of snake called Naga Rathnam. It was during this meeting that he received spiritual wisdom.
Pambatti Siddhar resorted to worshipping Lord Murugan in Maruthamalai after realizing the meaninglessness of harming living things and making a promise never to damage any life on Earth again. Lord Murugan appeared before him with his wives Valli and Deivana, pleased with his penance, and bestowed upon him wisdom. Since then, followers have regarded Pambatti Siddhar as “Maruthamalai Mamani.”

At Marudhamalai, Pambatti Siddhar sculpted a unique idol of Lord Murugan after receiving his blessings. This idol depicts Lord Murugan with two arms, similar to the Palani Murugan, with his left arm resting on his waist and his right hand holding an anklet. The idol also has anklets on her feet and a distinctive ponytail (Kudumi) at the back of her head.
Lord Murugan wears various decorations daily, such as sandalwood adornments, Vibudhi Kappu, and royal ornaments.
He puts on magnificent golden armor for essential events like Thaipoosam and Karthigai.
But at Arthajama Puja, he manifests as Dandayuthapani, an unadorned figure with no crown or decorations, displaying his divine self-image.

Marriage Registration Procedure

• Marriage Enrollment Fees: Rs. 250 (Charges can be revised without prior notification.)
• Marriages are performed within the temple’s opening hours.
• A minimum of one month of booking is advisable.

Marudamalai Temple Marriage Procedure

• The bride must be 18 years old or older.
• The groom must be 21 years or older.
• Only Hindu arranged marriages are allowed here in this temple
• The Bride and Groom’s Aadhar Cards Photocopies
• Bride’s parents’ and groom’s parents’ Aadhar Cards photocopies
• The devotee has to collect the form from the counter.
• Booking is necessary because only a limited number of marriages can take place on any given day.
• The Sannadhi only permits Thirumangalyam.
• Mantap and other arrangements can be planned outside the temple
• The temple authorities will issue the marriage registration certificate.
• Parents/guardians must be available for the marriages
• At present, due to COVID-19, Sannadhi Thirumangalyam is not available.
• Mantap, decoration can be planned in a hall outside the temple.
• Please note that love marriages are not allowed here in this temple.
• The devotee has to bring Pooja Samagri, a knot, and other required items as suggested by the priest.

Marudhamalai Temple Festivals

CHITTIRA POURNAMI

It will be performed between April 14th to May 13th

This is a Full moon day festival in the first Tamil month Chittirai (between April 14th to May 13th). Devotees observe fasting, worship God Murugan and break fast the next morning. This light [brilliance of the Poorna Chandra (full moon)] helps dispelling darkness to the souls. So Murugan worship and festival start on this day in the first Tamil month of the Tamil year. Similar celebrations as stated above take place in many Murugan temples.

VAIGASI VISAGAM

It will be performed between May 14th to June 14th

Vaigasi is the second Tamil month in the year (May 14th to June 14th). Vaigasi is the 16th star. Lord Murugan is also called Visagan.

AADI KRITIGAI

It will be performed between 16th July to 16th August

Aadi is the fourth month in the Tamil year (16th July to 16th August). Krithigai is the third star. After pooja and prayer, devotees are provided lunch in the noon.

IPPASI SASHTI

It will be performed between 17th October to 15th November

Ippasi is the seventh month in the Tamil year (17th October to 15th November). Sashti is the sixth day after the new moon day (Amavasai Day). It is on this Sashti day the six faced Lord Subramaniyam annihilated Soorabanman the most atrocious Asuran, who imprisoned the Devas, and the Devas were liberated by the Lord. So this festival is celebrated in all Murugan Temples in the world and specially in a very grand manner at Thiruchenthur Temple beside the seaside in Thiruchenthur, Tamil Nadu. Multitude of devotees attend this festival taking place there for seven days, culminating with the sangaram (destruction of all evils) and bestowing of the Lord’s grace and blessing to liberated souls.

THIRU KARTHIGAI

It will be performed between 16th November to 15th December

Karthigai is the eighth month in the Tamil year (16th November to 15th December). Thirukarthigai is the third star in the Tamil month. This festival is celebrated in all Murugan Temples all over the world and specially in a very grand manner at Thiru Annamalai Hill Temple in Tamil Nadu. In that evening special Deepa (fire which is called the “sacred thituchudar” in which from Lord Siva appeared in the sky) is placed on the hill top,Braman (God of creation) and Vishnu (Thirumal God of protection) vainly tried to trace the head and foot of that Fire and failed in their efforts. Multitude of devotees including the heads of the scared Mutts of Tamil Nadu which spread spiritualism among people in India and abroad witness this grand festival at Thiruvannamalai and attain the Grace and blessings of Lord Siva. At that night series of small lamps are lit in all Murugan Temples, and Bon Fire (called Sockappan) is lit in the compound of each temple celebrating the victory of the Lord.

THAI PUSAM

It will be performed between 14th January to 13th February

Thai is the tenth month in the Tamil year. (14th January to 13th February). Pusam is the eighth star in the Tamil month. This festival is celebrated in all Murugan temples all over the world and specially in a very grand manner at Palani Hill Temple in Tamil Nadu, Penang Hill and Waterfall Temple at Penang, Batu Caves Temple in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Singapore Temple. In this festival also Lord Subramaniyam comes in procession in silver charriot. Multitude of devotees attend this festival observing fasting and penance and carrying out special prayers, offering Abishega materials, garlands, fruits etc to Lord Subramaniyam and carrying Kavadies in their shoulders, to the Lord up the hill to obtain the Lord’s Grace and blessings and become cured of their disabilities, ill health, diseases, troubles etc.

Marudhamalai Temple Pooja Charges

The above-mentioned charges can be revised without prior intimation. Online booking is not available for the Pooja tickets. One day advance booking required for Abhishegam.

Every day abhishegam and archana to the deity is available on paying the charges. Ticket cost Rs. 8000 for ‘Nitya Pooja Kattalai will facilitate a devotee to perform abhishegam and archana in his or her name on a day as opted by the devotee. An offering of Rs.250/- and Rs.2,000/- for 15 years to the temple will fetch the prasadam of the deity of the Archana performed in the devotee’s name on Krithigai for one full year. Prasadam will be sent by post.

Vinayagar temple is located at the foothills and the deity here is called “Thaan Thondri Vinaayakar.”. There is a cave called “Paambaatti Sitthar Kugai,” which is dedicated to a Sitthar who lived here. Murugan Temple is located on the hilltop. One must take steps to reach the temple. It will be 60 steps (approx).

Marudamalai Murugan Temple

This temple was built in the 12th century AD. The Perur Puranam mentions that Soorapadama, with the aid of his powerful brothers Singamukha and Tharaka, declared war on the gods. In fear of the Asuras, Devas approached Lord Siva and sought His favour. Lord Siva comforted the gods by saying that Lord Muruga would rescue them. As advised by Lord Siva, Deva heads to Marudhamalai Hills for Lord Muruga’s. Perur Puranam also said that a king called Kusathvajan was blessed with a male issue, after offering prayers to Marudhamalai Muruga. It is also said that the Divine Cow Kamadhenu grazed in the pastures of the hills of Marudhamalai. It is mentioned in Perurpuranam that three neighbouring hills, Vellingiri, Nili, and Marudhamalai, are the manifestations of Lord Siva, Parvathi, and Muruga, respectively, and the three hills were taken together as the very symbol of Somaskanda.

The Best Time to visit is October to June. The crowds will be on Thaipoosam, Thiru Krithigai, Skanda Shasti, etc.
