Oath takes place inside the west gopuram on the right side there is a hole. It is believed that anybody utters falsehood the serpent strikes him dead instantly.

As per the folklore, Once a man from TamilNadu came here and challenged that no one can cure the poison of snakebites other than him. At Chengannur there was an ancient Brahmin family quite famous in the art. But only a widow and her 12-year-old son were the survivors in their family when the Tamilian visited Chengannur. One morning, the Tamilian challenged the little boy with his skills. The boy told his mother about it. The same night he had a dream in which the Naga king appeared before him and pointed out to him a small pipe with a fierce cobra inside.

As bid by the Naga King, the little boy took this pipe before the Tamilian next morning and unleashed the serpent. The frightened boaster immediately admitted fear and entreated the boy to save him. On request of the Little boy, the snake withdrew within the pipe.

The Tamilian deposited all his medicines in a pit near the Kuttambalam and covered it with the stone slab and left the place. It is believed that those who stand on the stone and pray to look at the Srikoil need have no fear about snakebites.

As for the boy he made a hole to the south of the passage of the west gopuram and installed the pipe here. It is the same hole where the Oath takes place.

Chengannur Bhagavathy Thriputharattu Details

Every day morning, after opening Srikoil the head priest and his assistant removes the Nirmalayam and hands it over to Varrier attendant along with Udayada without looking at it. The Varrier examines the dress closely and if there are signs of bleeding she sends it to Thazhamon Matham, the traditional residence of the Temple Tantri. There the lady of the house scrutinises the cloth again and confirm the menses.

The Udayada after the occurrence is available for sale to the public. Usually, the high recommendation is required for this divine cloth. The sanctum is kept closed for 3 days when the Goddess gets menses. During this time, a processional deity will be installed in a room on the North-west corner of the Nalambalam.

On the fourth day, the bathing ceremony Thriputarattu is conducted by taking the image in a procession on a female Elephant to the nearby Pampa river.

On return, Lord Siva mounted on Elephant awaits the arrival of his consort and receives here ceremoniously. The deities then enter their respective sanctums and the Pooja process resume at the Sanctum. It is said that witness this event will be blessed with happy marriage, Progeny, Wealth and prosperity.

Chengannur Bhagavathy Temple History

As per the Legend, Sati daughter of Daksha Prajapati married Lord Shiva against her father’s wish. Daksha decided to perform Yagna inviting all Devas but not Lord Siva and His daughter Sati. Sati who came to know about the Yagna reached her maternal house to educate her father not to go against Siva. Daksha insulted Sati before the guests in the Yagna Mandapam. Angered Sati raised high and self-immolated her in the Yogagni. Lord Siva who came to know about Sati’s death, ordered Veera Bhadra to kill Daksha. Veera Bhadra along with Kali and other Siva Ganas executed his master command. Lord Siva after collecting Sati’s corpse danced Pralaya Thandavam (Dance of Destruction). To protect the universe from the destruction Lord Vishnu sent his Chakra and charred Sati’s body into pieces. The body parts fell across Indian Sub-continent which were called Sakthi Peetas. It is believed that Sati’s Yoni Mandala or Female reproductive organ fell here. Hence the deity will have periods.

Another interesting story attached to this temple, that Lord Siva instructed Agastya to reach South to balance the Earth as all Devas are attending Lord Siva and Parvati wedding the in the Himalayas. As instructed Sage Agastya reached south and selected that part of the Sahyadri called Somadri for his meditation. Lord Siva and Parvati appeared before him in the wedding dress and blessed Sage Agastya. The Devi had menses while they reached Somadri. The divine couple, therefore, stayed here for 28 days after the purificatory bath.
