Daulatabad Fort History

This was built by the King Raja Bhillamraj of Yadav Dynasty. It was the capital of the Hindu Kingdoms during the 12th Century and was called by Deogiri, which means the hill of the Gods. Deogiri passed into the possession of the Sultans of Delhi in 1308 AD. 30 years later, Muhammad bin Tughlak, ascending the Delhi Throne, ordered his capital to be moved to the Southern City which he renamed Daulatabad. Later he regretted the decision as it involved a terrible toll in human misery and thousands of Delhi Citizens perished on the way. The Sultan ordered the whole mass of migrants to move back to the abandoned capital.

The outer wall runs for 6 Km and there are several inner walls with heavy iron gates fitted with elephant spikes.

The first gateway leads into the enclosure which has, at the left, a huge water tank and further up there is an ancient Hindu Temple. Its roof supported by 150 Pillars. Towards the right is the Chand Minar, a pillar of victory built by a king to commemorate his conquest of Daultatabad.

A large gun about 5.5 mt long lies at the top of round high bastion. The solid rock is scraped to a height of about 76 mt.

The total height of fortress is about 183 mt. There is a reservoir on top.

Seated Buddha occupies the Shrine,
his feet on the lotus, his hands folded in the attitude of preaching,
and over his shoulders are celestial beings.
Cave 3Pillared Verandah has a hall supported on 12 richly carved columns.
In the front of the shrine which is occupied by large seated Buddha are two groups of Votaries, male and female.
The total depth of the cave is 24.99 mt and its width of 19.20 mt.
This is one of the most completely developed and among
the latest of the Buddhist Cave temples in India.
Cave 4Is a Chaitya-hall of the Hinayana system.
Cave 5Not much interesting.
Almost a 1.5 Km away to the east in the same range of
hills are the second group of excavations.
Cave 6Features of Chaitya-hall and Vihara. The shrine contains a
Huge Buddha with attendants.
Cave 7Large inner Cell with an imaging chamber.
6 cells which served as living quarters for monks.
The sculptures are characteristic of Mahayana mythology.

Kailash Temple Ellora caves History

Cave 16 is the Kailash Temple which is dedicated to Lord Siva. This is Rock-cut architecture which was built in the 8th and Early 9th Centuries. It is regarded as the monolithic structure in the world. It is estimated that the work of quarrying its 3,000,0000 cubic feet of rock must have occupied at least 100 years. This temple was constructed by King Krishna 1, of the Rashtrakut dynasty in 760 AD.

It was double-storeyed, 45.72 mt x 30.48 mt at its base. The roof is a pyramidal having a three-tier tower and a projecting gable-front.

The adjoining walls were painted with Narasimha Avatar, Ravana Shaking Kailasha, Siva legends etc. Most of them depict Siva with Parvathi. The central door leads to the Shrine containing Siva Linga.

The temple is faced by a pavilion, 15.24 mt high. The pavilion, 6.09 mt square is the abode of Nandi. On each of the Nandi is a pillar, a stone and a flagstaff which is 15.54 mt high with carvings of Siva cult.

These two pillars are among the best work of art in Kailasha.

The horseshoe-shaped rock is of height 76.20 mt. Ajanta Caves is a combination of 30 caves. Best work is to be found in Caves 1, 2, 16, 17 and 19. Best Sculptures are in Caves 1, 4, 7, 19, 24 and 26. Caves 9, 10, 19, 26 and 29 are Chaitya-halls. The remainings caves are Viharas. Chaityas Caves 9 and 10 and Viharas 8, 12, 13 and 30  are the oldest (2nd Century BC to 2nd Century AD) which are the creation of the Hinayana system. The other caves belong to the 15th and 16th Centuries and make the Mahayana series.
