Ujjain Harsiddhi Mandir History

As per the folklore, Prajapati Daksha’s daughters married Lord Siva against her father’s wish. Daksha doesn’t have a good relationship with his son-in-law Lord Siva. Daksha decided to insult his son-in-law in which he decided to perform Yagna in a grand. He had invited all the gods and goddesses, excluding Lord Siva from the invitation list.

Sati who came to know about this Yagna thought of educating her father as the Yagna will not be fruitful without Siva. Daksha insulted Sati before the guests. Sati who was offended by the scoldings of her father self-immolated in the Yogagni. On knowing this Siva raised her and danced the dance of destruction. Veerabhadra who took birth from Siva’s anger reached Yagna along with Kali and other Siva Ganas destroyed to Yajna and killed Daksha.

Lord Siva did Pralaya Thandavam after collecting Sati’s body. To stop the destruction of the universe, Vishnu sent his disc to break the corpse of Sati body into pieces. The chakra broke the corpse into 18 pieces, which fell across the Indian subcontinent. These 18 places were called by Sakthi Peethas. Ujjain is the place where elbow from Sati’s body fallen here.

As per the Legend, Demon Chand and Prachanda tried to enter Mount Kailash when Lord Siva and Goddess Parvati were alone. Lord Siva ordered Chandi to destroy the demons. Chandi killed the demons after a rigorous battle. Lord Siva was impressed with Chandi’s effort and called her by the name Harsiddhi, which means one who destroys evils.

This temple stands 13th in the list of 51 Saktipeetas across India.
