Rameswaram Temple History, Darshan, Dress Code and Route info.

Rameswaram Temple is located on an Island in the South-east corner of Ramnad district. This place is in the northern part of the island which is said to represent Lord Vishnu’s Conch. The uniqueness of this temple is that the holy water of the Ganga is used every day to perform Abhisheka. There are 22 Tirthas in the temple, out of which, Mahalakshmi, Savitri, Gayathri, and Saraswathi are the most important. Dhanushkodi is the place where Rama stationed one End of his bow on the sands here. It is at this place where Maha Dati (The Bay of Bengal) and The Ratnakaram(The Indian Ocean) meet. Thousands of devotees visit Dhanushkodi on the new moon day in Adi and Thai for the holy bath in the sea.

Rameswaram Temple History

After killing Ravana and other Asuras, Rama stayed here with Sita for some time on the Mount Kandamadana. To get relieved from Brahma Hathi(Ravana was the descendant of Brahma), he requested Hanuman to bring a Siva Linga from Mount Kailas. Hanuman took a long time to return with a Siva linga. Rama installed Siva Linga in the auspicious time which Sita made out of Sand. The deity is called by Ramalingar or Ramanathar. Rama installed the Linga brought by Hanuman, which is seen north of Rameswaram. This deity is called by Visweswarar or Kasi Lingam or Hanuman Lingam. The goddess is called Parvathavardhini or Malaivalar Kathali. Rama Lingam is said to be the twelve manifestations of Siva at Jyotir Linga.

It is believed that a visit to Varanasi is not complete unless accompanied by a visit to Rameswaram.
