Parthasarathy Temple Triplicane History

It is believed that this temple was built by the Chola King, Sumati Raja Chola. Chola King was an ardent devotee of Sri Venkateswara Swamy of Tirumala and wanted to see Lord Venkateswara as Krishna. The main deity in this temple is Sri Venkata Krishna. There is an edict in the temple dated 808 A.D., signifying a grant by Pallava King Nandi Varman. From the inscriptions on the temple walls, it is known that this temple received grants from the Vijayanagar Kings.

There are separate shrines for Sreemath Nandan, Narasimha, Sri Rama, Gajendra Varada, Vedavalli Nachiyar and Andal within the temple complex.

Legend associated with Parthasarathy Temple Tank

The Tamil name Thiru Alli Keni is translated to become triplicane. The prefix Thiru is sacred. Keni is the name for a tank. A flower creeper is Alli. Maybe there once were flower creepers in the tank in front of the temple. ‘Alliankothai’ is the name of the goddess here.
The reason the place is called Thiruvallikeni could therefore be that the ‘keni’ (tank) was filled with water-bearing springs blessed by Goddes Thiruvalli. It is stated that once upon a time, the entire area was a Thulasivanam, with this tank serving as its center. Brindaranyam was the name given to it (Brinda, meaning Thulasi).

It is said that this tank is free of fish. An interesting tale explains this peculiar incident.
On the banks of the Go-Mathi river, a rishi by the name of Muthkalar (son of Kanva Maharishi) was once performing penance. Kokilar, Gautamar, Kadhakar, Vimalar, and Vidurar were the five rishis who were traveling to the Kairaveni tank one day when Bhrighu Maharishi was performing intense penance to become Lord Sriman Narayana.

Muthkalar, whom they met, joined them as well. He began his penance as soon as he arrived in Brindaranyam. He opened his eyes and took a quick look at the water in the tank one day. He observed a large fish happily swimming around in the water with a large group of relatives.
The rishi asked the fish to leave the tank and find another location because he thought their playing would divert his attention. Failure to which the rishi said they would be dead when the sun rose in the morning. The fish fled the tank upon hearing this, allowing the rishi to continue his prayers in peace. According to legend, even today, the fish avoid the tank because of the rishi’s wish.
