Maya Devi Temple Haridwar History

As per the Legend, Lord Siva married Daksha’s daughter Sati against his wish. Daksha Prajapati decided to perform Yagna and invited all Devas excluding Lord Siva. Sati on knowing this reached her paternal home to advise her father. Daksha insulted her daughter before the guests. Angered Sati self-immolated her in the Yoga Agni. On knowing this, Lord Siva ordered Veerbhadra and Kali to destroy Yagna and Kill Daksha. Lord Siva collected Sati’s corpse and danced the dance of destruction. In order to save the universe, Lord Vishnu sent his Chakra and made Sati’s body into pieces. The broken pieces spread across the Indian Subcontinent. Sati’s Navel fallen here, hence it is one of the Sakthi Peeta. It is one the Sakthi Peetas in Haridwar, the other two are Manasa Devi and Chandi Devi Temple. This temple was built in 11th century AD.

There are three deities in the Sanctum Sanctorum. Goddess Maya Devi located in the middle with Goddess Kali on the left and Kamakhya on the Right.
