Mannarasala Temple History, Festival and Pooja details

Mannarasala Temple History

As per the Legend, Parasurama (an incarnation of Lord Vishnu) thought of donating Land to Brahmins to get rid of Sin of Killing Kshatriyas. With gifted weapon from Lord Siva, he pulled the Land from Sea and offered to Brahmins. As the Land is salinity which is not suitable for living, Parasurama prayed to Lord Siva for the solution. As advised by Lord Siva, Parasurama did penance for Nagaraja near Seashore in the Southern part of Kerala. Impressed Nagaraja appeared before and granted his wish. Serpents spread the poison across the land which turned into fertile land. Parasurama installed Anantha and Vasuki Idols and nominated priests to perform Daily Poojas.

Descendants of Nambiathy family, Vasudeva and Sreedevi were blessed with one normal child and five hooded serpent child. Nagaraja blessed the Brahmin couple as they rescued and served serpents when the fire broke out in the forest nearby. Nagaraja entered Samadhi after guiding his brother to enter into matrimony. It is believed that Nagaraja still resides here and look after the family and devotees.

Annual Festival is celebrated on Ayilyam of Thulam (Oct-Nov). During this time devotees make offerings of Gold, Silver, Salt etc. On this special day, the serpent gods are taken in procession to the Illam of Valiamma and offerings of Neerum Palum (milk and water), flour, turmeric, and boiled rice are made.
