Gaya Temple Bihar, Timings, History, Opening and Closing Dates

Gaya Temple History

As per the folklore, Gayasura did penance for Lord Vishnu and got the boon that whoever sees him will reach heaven. Gayasura increased his body size with the intention that everyone on Earth would reach heaven. Indra, the King of Heaven, approached the supreme gods Lord Vishnu, Lord Siva, and Lord Brahma, saying that there is an imbalance in creation. The supreme gods approached Gayasura in the form of Brahmin and requested that he perform Yagna on top of his body. They also laid the condition that he should not move for 7 days; otherwise, he will be killed. Gayasura raised his body to create the platform for Yagna. To bear the pain, Gayasura went to sleep, counting the number of days based on the rooster crowing in the early hours. On the final day, Lord Siva, in the form of a cock, crowed much earlier. Gayasura, not knowing this, woke up and disturbed the Yagna. For this mistake, Gayasura is ready to offer himself. Impressed Devas appeared before him and granted a wish that the places where he lay down would become holy shrines. The head part will be the holy abode of Lord Vishnu and is called Siro Gaya; the navel will be Lord Brahma and is called Nabhi Gaya; and Lord Siva will be at the feet and is called Pada Gaya. I also granted one more wish: that whoever offers Pinda Pradhan at these places will credit their ancestors.
