Baidyanath Temple History, Timings, Darshan details

Baidyanath Temple History

As per the Legend, Ravana thought of bringing Lor Siva to Lanka for permanent for which he performed strict penance. Impressed Lord Siva, handed Atma Linga as he himself can’t come and stay at Lanka. Lord Siva instructed Ravana, not to keep Atma Linga on the Earth. Devas prayed Lord Vishnu to stop Ravana reaching Lanka with the Linga. As the sun was setting, Ravana found a Brahman Cowherd (Lord Vishnu disguised himself) and hand over the Linga and asked him not to keep on the Earth. After three repeat calls, Vishnu kept the Linga on the Earth. Ravana tried hard to remove the Earth. All his efforts went vain and returned to Lanka with empty hands. This is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas across India. It is believed that Lord Rama worshipped Lord Siva during Tretayuga.

As per the folklore, Sati immolated herself in the Yogagni when got hurt with her father’s words. Knowing this Lord Siva sent Veerabadra and Kali to destroy Daksha’s Yagna. Lord Siva carried the corpse of Sati Devi and danced the dance of destruction. To rescue the universe, Lord Vishnu sent his discus and destroyed the body of Sati Devi. The broken pieces of Sati Devi fell across the Indian Subcontinent and are called Sakti Peeta. It is believed the heart portion of Sati Devi fallen here.

This temple was built in the 19th Century. It is believed that worshipping Lord Siva at this shrine will be blessed with good health. As per the Puranas,
