As per the Legend, Goddess Banashankari killed the demon Durgamasura at this place. The deity is also called as Vana Shankari or Shakambari or Banadevi. Ban or Van means Forest, Shankari means Lord Siva’s Consort. Banashankari is the incarnation of Goddess Parvathi. Banadastami will be celebrated on a grand which falls on the 8th day after New moon in Pushya Masam.

This temple was built in 630 AD by the Jagadekamalla I, Kalyani Chalukya Kings. Chalukya kings worshipped the goddess as their Kula Daivam. Later this temple was renovated by Vijayanagara kings. The present form the temple was built in 1750, by Parusharam Agale, a Maratha chieftain.

Banashankari Jatre will be celebrated in the months of January or February. During this Annual festival, Rath Yatra and boat festival will be celebrated in a grand. The processional deity will be taken out as a procession around the city.
