Appanapalli Bala Balaji Temple is dedicated to Lord Venkateswara. The deity is believed to be self-manifested here.

Appanapalli Village History

As per the Legends, Sage Kasyapa married Kadru, daughter of Daksha Prajapati. Kasyapa had many other wives among them Vinata is popularly known. Kasyapa and Kadru were blessed with 1000 serpents. Kadru had a bet with her sister Vinata, whoever loses the bet will serve others. Here is the bet, Kadru said that the Indra’s White Horsetail is black when Vinata disagreed on this. Kadru too knows that the Horsetail is white, she wants to play a trick so that she can enslave her sister. For which she asked her Sons twine themselves to the tail themselves so that it looks black. But Kadru’s sons disobeyed her request for which she angered and cursed them that they all will die in the Yagna fire. Worried Nagas calmly executed the command. Vinata lost the bet and became the slave. Garuda born to servant Vinata and started serving Kadru. Garuda relieved his mother from slavery by servicing Vinata’s command for Nectar (Amruth).

From then on Garuda started hating Nagas and started eating snake each day. King Jimutavahana gave up his life while protecting a serpent Sankachoodudu from Garuda. Hence the place popular by the name Arpana Palli (Arpana means Sacrifice, Palli means Village), later transformed to Appanapalli. On request of Jimutavahana, Sage Kasyapa ordered Garuda to divert rivulet of Vasista flow through Appanpalli. The river flow passed through the village and serpents which were killed by the Garuda attained salvation. Hence, the rivulet was known by the Vynateya (Son of Vinata).

Another version is that Serpents approached King Jimutavahana for protection. Jimutavahana went to Garuda and ready to offer his life for serpents. Impressed Garuda offered a boon, Jimutavahana asked him to revive serpents for which Garuda replied that it is not possible. In that case, he asked him to perform the last rites so that serpents will attain salvation. Garuda then turned the rivulet Vasista, which flowed over the dead Serpent bodies. Hence, the village popular by the name Tarpana Palli (Tarpana means Performing Last rites, Palli means village) which later transformed to Appanapalli

Appanapalli Bala Balaji Temple History

Vakulamatha wants to see Lord as a child, on request of his mother Lord self-manifested here. Here is the story, Molleti Rama Swamy a coconut vendor, son of Molleti Munaiah and Mangamma, is an ardent devotee of Lord Venkateswara. He used to visit Tirupati regularly, once Lord in the form of a child appeared in the dreams of the devotee and told him that he will manifest in his village. One day Rama Swamy noticed Lord Balaji Idol in the weighing pan, he named the Idol as Bala Balaji and installed the Idol.
