Ambalapuzha Temple History, Timings, Darshan and Pooja details

Ambalapuzha temple History

Once Pooratam Thirunal Thampuran, the Brahmin ruler of Champakasseri (Present Ambalapuzha) was travelling in a boat along with Sage Vilwamangalam Swamiyar. Suddenly, they started hearing the melodious flute music. They have noticed that the music is coming from the South-east corner of the present temple at Ambalapuzha. The sage recognized that it is the Divine music of Lord Krishna. They circumambulated the tree and prostrated before it.

Thampuran decided to build the temple and thought of installing Lord Krishna Idol. At the time of installation, it is found that the Idol was partially damaged on the left side.

Vilwamangalam Swamy advised Thampuran to get the Idol of Parthasarathi from Kurichi, a neighbouring place belong to Thekkkumkoor King. With whom, they don’t have good terms. Thampuran’s minister quietly got the permission from the Idol owner and the Idol was moved to the boats. Then the soldiers opened fire into the air, proclaimed aloud by beating their drums that they were taking home the Idol. Thekkumkoor soldiers didn’t make any attempt to stop the Idol movement. The event took place on the Moolam day of a Mithunam (Jun-Jul). It is to commemorate this that the Champakulam boat-race is held every year. The Idol was installed on Thiruvonam day in Mithunam in 1613 AD.
