Pulicat lake Nellore

Pulicat Lake Nellore occupies an area of 720 sq.km in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. It occupies 600 Sq.km of in Andhra Pradesh and 120 Sq. Km in Tamil Nadu. Pulicat Lake touches the areas Nellore Tada, Sullurpeta, Doravari Satram, Vakadu and Chittamuru Mandal in Andhra Pradesh and TamilNadu Tiruvallur District Gummidipoondi, Ponneri Taluk. It is the second biggest salt lake in the world. SHAR centre was built on an island dividing Pulicat and Ocean which occupies 44 Sq. Km of area. Pulicat Lake touches Ocean, The Bay of Bengal at Palaverikad in Tamil Nadu and KonduruPalem and Rayadorapu in Vakadu Mandal, Andhra Pradesh. Water from Rivers, Swarna Mukhi, Kalangi in Andhra Pradesh and Araniyar in Tamil Nadu flows into Pulicat Lake during Rainy season. Due to heavy tides in the ocean, seawater enters Pulicat Lake, hence it is Salty.

It is said that the depth of the Lake was 4 mt in the 1450’s and now it is not even half meter. Research analysts used to say that there used to be 56 variety of fishes and 204 varieties of India and Foreign origin birds and now it went down. Pulicat is the habitat for 10,000 fishermen from 17 villages.

Pulicat Lake Nellore Birds Sanctuary

In 1976, the Government of India recognized and established bird Sanctuary at Pulicat Lake and Nelapattu. Many Foreign origin birds spend their time here for reproduction. Birds reside on the trees at Nelapattu, Vedurupattu, Bodilingalapadu and Srihari Kota island and feed on Pulicat Lake during their stay. Birds reach Pulicat by Oct and stay till Mar/Apr months. In 1976, Pulicat Lake was under Rajahmundry circle later moved to Tirupati Circle in 1980. Later, it came under the Wild Life Division in 1982. Pulicat Wild Life Protection Center was established in 1985 and is governed by DFO.

Grey Pelicans stay at Nelapattu from Oct-Mar/Apr for their reproduction and feeds on Pulicat Lake

Flamingos use Pulicat for their food. They stay at Pulicat Lake for days.

Painted Storks stay at Vedurupattu lake and Srihari Kota Beripeta and uses Pulicat Lake for their food.

Grey Heron, Black Ducks, White Ducks, Marbled teal, Terns, Egrets, Kites and Partridges, Quails, Sea Gulls, Open-billed Stork, curlews, stilts, plovers, sandpipers, lapwings, redshank, Shoveler, Garganey, Gadwall, Marsh Sandpiper and Black-tailed Godwit used to visit this place.

Pulicat Lake Flamingo Festival

The then District Collector Praveen Kumar visited Pulicat Lake in 2000 and organized a plan for 3 days Flamingo festival in 2001. In 2013, State Government of Andhra Pradesh had it on their list and celebrated Flamingo Festival on 9th,10th, and 11th Jan. Every year this festival will be celebrated in a grand at Sulurpeta, Nelapattu, and Tada.

 

Best Time to Visit Pulicat Lake Nellore

From Oct to Mar/Apr months is the best time to visit Pulicat Lake. Birds from Australia, Nigeria, Siberia, Pakistan and from Europe reach here for their reproduction. 150 to 160 varieties of birds visit Pulicat Lake in a year.

By Air

  1. Nearest Airport is at Renigunta which is 73 km away.
  2. Pulicat Lake is 103 km from Chennai International airport

By Train

  1. Train frequency is high from Chennai Central to Sullrupeta. Trains with 1-hour frequency.
  2. Renigunta railway station is 75 km away. From there it is by bus.

By Bus

  1. The Direct bus is available from Tirupati to Sullurpeta. Palle Velugu Service is available with a 1-hour frequency which takes 1 hour 30 mins journey
  2. Tirupati to Naidupeta (1-hour journey) and from Naidupeta to Sullurpeta ( 30 mins journey).
