As per the Legend,  At Pukar, the capital of the Chola empire, there are two merchants. Kannaki daughter of one of the Merchant got married to Kovalan son of another merchant. Kovalan attracted to a dancer by name Madhavi. Kovalan rejoined his wife after becoming penniless. Kannaki happily accepted her husband and offered him one of her golden anklets for sale. They moved to Madura, the Pandya to start a new life.

Kovalan entered Goldsmith Street attached to the Royal household. King ordered Staff to executed Kovalan on the false theft case. Kovalan was executed and his body laid in a Madura Street. Angered Kannaki reached the King’s court and showed them the second anklet. She accused The King him of Killing her innocent husband.

She broke open her other anklet and a lot of precious stones spilt out sparkling. Kannaki went out to the streets, tore off her left breast in fury and cursed the city of Madura which started burning immediately.

Then Kannaki left Madura and the Pandyan Kingdom came to Chenkunnu in Kerala. There she joined with her husband burning herself. The Chera King of the time, Senkuttuuvan, deeming Kannaki to be an incarnation of Kali, installed an Idol.
