Puri Temple History

The temple is a complex of four structures in an East-West alignment. The Bhog Mandir, The Nat Mandir, The Jagmohan and the inner sanctuary, the last of which is surmounted by a conical tower 58.5 mt high. The Bhog Mandir is believed to have been added in the 14th or 15th century, long after the original structure was completed.

In the inner sanctuary are the three holy images of Jagannath, his brother Balabhadra, and his sister Subhadra.

Temple entrance is decorated with scenes from the life of Krishna, and the gates and walls are heavily ornamented with marble figures of lions and sentries.

Crowned with Vishnu’s flag and wheel. The tower, however, retains its commanding appearance in spite of the heavy cement overlay. To preserve the temple from the corroding effects of sea wind, parts of the stone masonry and the elaborate carvings have been covered with thick plaster.

Distributed around the main building are some 30 to 40 shrines of various dimensions and designs.

Puri Rath Yatra Date: 9th Jun 2017

The importance of Jagannath Temple and Its Rath Yatra was mentioned in Brahma Purana, Padma Purana and Purushottama Khanda of Skanda Purana. The uniqueness of this temple is that the main deities will be taken out in a procession in 3 Chariots. The

Ratha Yatra starts on Ashada Suddha Vidiya day. The devotees pull the chariot for around 2 km from Jagannath Temple to Gundicha Temple. The Idols will be placed at Gundicha Mandir. Idols will reach Jagannath temple on Ekadasi day, Chariots will be pulled back from Gundincha Mandir.

Jagannatha Ratha is 45 ft in height with 16 wheels and is called by Nandi Gosha. Balabadhra will be taken out in Thaladwaja Ratha which runs on 14 wheels with 43 ft in height and appears in Red and Blue colour. Subadra will be taken out on a Ratha with 12 wheels and appears in Red and Black colours. This Ratha is 42 ft in height and is called by Darpadhalana also called by Devadhalana or Padmadwaja.

The devotees are allowed the pull chariots along the Puri streets. It is believed that the one who pulls the chariot will be relieved from the rebirth cycle and attains salvation.

The uniqueness of the festival is that these chariots are constructed with wood collected from Phassi, Dhausa and other pre-defined trees each year. This Chariot will be built by the experts who are masters in following the standards.

Starting date: Akshaya Tritiya

Chandan Yatra Festival starts on Akshaya Tritiya day and runs for 21 days. Processional deities, all 5 Siva deities and Lord Jagannath-Madan Mohan will be taken out in a procession on the Grand Road of Puri at evening hours, The procession starts from the temple and ends after reaching Narendra tank.
