Kolhapur Mahalaxmi Temple History, Timings, Aarti details

Kolhapur Mahalaxmi Temple History

In olden days, Kolhapur called as Karvir. Kolhapur is the holy abode of Goddess Lakshmi Devi. This is popularly called by Dakshina Kasi.

As per the Legend, Once upon a time Lord Siva and Goddess Maha Lakshmi were discussing their respective habitats. While in the discussion, they had a dispute over Kasi and Karvir, which one is more important. Both approached Lord Vishnu for settling the dispute. Lord Vishnu picked up a pair of scales, places Kasi in one pan, Karvir in the other. The pan with Karvir weighed high than Kasi.

Special about this temple is that Siva Linga is located right above the Garba Griha of Maha Lakshmi shrine in a second storey. There are images in the temple which date back to the 11th and 12th centuries.

A holy dip in the temple tank, Manikarnika followed by the Darshan of Siva and Mahalakshmi will be blessed with good fortune. During the third Kalp, while Siva and Parvati were staying here, the goddess lost a Kundal or earring. It was of Pearls (Mani). The Siva Ganas searched for it and went on even to dig the earth to recover it. They recovered Kundal deep in the earth. The Goddess pleased with their effort and turned the mud pool to Tirtha and named it as ‘Manikarnika’ after her Mani Kundal.

Kolhapur Temple, Mahalakshmi, Saraswati Devi, Timings, History

Kolhapur Temple History

Temple is one of the 18 Sakthi Peetas in India. As per legend, Prajapati Daksha daughter Sati Devi married Lord Siva. Prajapati had a rivalry with Lord Siva and started acting against Siva. Daksha decided to perform Yajna and invited all Gods and Goddess, leaving Lord Siva. Sati visited her maternal house, though she was not invited. Daksha insulted Sati with his acts and words. Angered Sati immolated herself in the Yogagni. Angered Siva ordered Veerabadhra who took birth from his anger to kill Daksha. Veerabadhra along with Kali and other Siva Ganas destroyed Yagna and slayed Prapati Daksha. Lord Siva on collecting Sati’s body performed Pralaya Thandavam. Lord Vishnu to stop the destruction destroyed Sati’s body with his Disc. The disc broke the corpse into 18 pieces which fell across the Indian subcontinent. It is believed that Sati’s eyes are fallen here.

It is said that Adi Sankaracharya installed Sri Chakra in this temple. Lord Siva in this temple complex is believed to be self-manifested.

From the inscriptions, it is known that this temple was built during 4th and 5th BC. This region was ruled by Chalukyas, Mouryas, Yadava Rulers and Sivaji, This temple received huge contributions for the kings.
