Hampi Virupaksha Temple History

The Temple Tower is a nine-storeyed construction with 165 ft in height and 20 ft in width. This Gopuram was renovated in 1510 AD. As per the folklore, Rama worshipped Goddess Pampavathi and Lord Virupaksha during Vanavasasm. Rama and Lakshmana stayed here for a while after making Sugreeva as the King. This is the place where Hanuman informed Rama after discovering Sita Devi in Lanka. Hence the name Kishkinda Kanda. This temple was built by Lakkana Dandesha, a chieftain in Vijayanagara Empire during 1336 – 1570 A.D. Hampi stretches over an area of 26 Sq.Km.

The Sanctum Sanctorum is square and enshrines a Siva Linga, which is being worshipped since the 7th Century A.D without any break till today. The Lord Virupaksha was the tutelary deity of the Vijayanagara kings. The Mukhamantapa or Ranagamantapa was built in 1510 A.D by the king Krishnadevaraya, to commemorate his coronation in 1509 A.D. Monolithic Nandi statue is located right opposite to the temple

An inverted image of Big Gopuram is visible during early hours from Sunrise to 9:00 am ( around). The annual festival will be celebrated in the month of Nov for 3 days. The wooden chariot is pulled across the streets during the festival days.

Hampi Virupaksha temple is one of the monuments designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Entrance Fees: Rs.2 per person.

Vittala Temple Hampi History, Timings, Opening and Closing Hours

Vittala Temple Hampi History

Temple is located on the southern banks of the River Tungabhadra and was built in 15th Century AD. This temple architecture reflects the style of Vijayanagara dynasty. This temple has a number of pillared Mandaps. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu who is worshipped here as Vittala and faces East. Stone Chariot at the entrance of the temple is so beautifully carved which attracts every tourist visiting the temple. The chariot is the virtual trademark of Hampi and the stone wheels still rotate. This chariot house Garuda Image who faces the temple. The brick superstructure which forms the pyramidal top of the chariot is absent.

The Mahamantap is quite big and is carved with images. It has 56 musical pillars with figures of dancers and musicians sculpted on them, which produce sounds or notes of distinct musical instruments when tapped. While the pillars on the outer periphery are slender, those inside are of the Yali type and stouter.

The Mantap house the Garbha Griha and has a number of other shrines. The shrine is a treasure trove which includes reliefs of animals and humans.

Purandaradasa Mantap is right behind the Vittala Temple, commemorating the great composer who seated by the river, wrote many songs in praise of Lord Krishna.

Lotus Mahal Hampi, Opening and Closing Timings

Entry fees: Free entry for all.

Lotus Mahal Hampi

Local call Lotus Mahal as Chitrangi Mahal, from where Royal women used to watch celebrations and processions. It is a two-storeyed building has intricate work with sharp-edged awnings, crenellated arches and tiered facades. The base is elaborate and the top comprises three-tiered Shikaras. The interior is plain with clear spaces. At the centre, the roof has a Lotus bud as a decoration, giving the Mahal its name. The structure is once believed to have had an elaborate network of pipes to carry water to keep the interiors cool.

The archways of the structure resemble petals of a lotus and provide the whole structure with the shape of a half-open lotus bud. The central dome is carved in the shape of a lotus bud. Even the towers of the Lotus Mahal are in a pyramidal shape and resembles lotus petals.

Elephant stable is located to the south of the Zenana enclosure. There are 11 huge stalls for the elephants. The interiors are bare with sandy floors and chain hooks from the roof. One can almost visualise a looming elephant swaying from side to side in the large caverns.
